A Clean, Well-Lighted Place

Since the 1960s, art galleries have asserted that art should be seen in “a clean well-lighted place.” Attending gallery shows regularly, Jisun Lee notes: “You are not expected to pay attention to the rest of the space but to the artwork itself and the space between you and the art object.” Jisun challenges the conventions of the “white cube” by drawing our attention to the functional and commercial aspects of these presumed ideal spaces.
