Six-channel video installation (7:30 minutes)
Ksenia Tavrina plays six Russian characters who prepare borscht in a communal Soviet apartment, or коммуналка. Their banal chatter from a simpler era offers solace in the face of today’s political instability. The apartments represent a collective Soviet ideal, and the borscht represents a shared heritage of Russia and Ukraine. The piece therefore expresses nostalgia for the ideals rather than the reality of the Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991.
