Each photograph in Gong’s series seeks to represent one of the ten fundamental guidelines for daily life under the teachings of Buddhism. His images reference the history of Western still life painting, but they are composed using objects and materials from China and its diaspora, resulting in a sense of awkwardness and tension between two historical and religious traditions that, today, are more than ever in conflict.
