Cruz’s installation combines utilitarian objects with references to Santeria, an old-world syncretistic religion, to memorialize cultural trauma, particularly that of women living in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria. A freestanding structure that viewers can enter, Traumatic Iterations takes the form of a symbolic altar, like those found in many Latin American households, which has been trapped by non-domestic, institutional materials. Together these elements allude to the ways that Latin women are taught to build, destroy, and rebuild coping mechanisms for trauma through the restraints of tradition, religion, and guilt.
