Taole Zhu

A Little Darker than the Entire Universe

Zhu’s video-sculptures were developed out of a lecture-performance that addresses his interests in electronic music, conceptions of futurity, the Hollywood science-fiction boom, 3D modeling software, and issues of cultural displacement in contemporary China. The resulting objects combine references to outer space and the coldness of technology with the more humanistic pathos of clothing and dilapidated construction materials. Together these elements evoke, for the artist, a sense of future loss that plays an essential role in our assessment of contemporary reality.
